Colorful impressions

A team of researchers in a collaboration between the BPE and COPS groups from the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology at the
University of Twente and the FOM Institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics (AMOLF) succeeded in infiltrating natural fluorescent
proteins into air sphere photonic crystals. They showed that light that was emitted by the stimulated natural fluorescent proteins
strongly interacted with the surrounding photonic crystal. This is the first time that control of light from a biological emitter inside a
photonic crystal has been demonstrated. The work is featured on the cover of the April issue of the journal Small. ... read more

Fast, Sensitive Sensor for Point-of-care Viral Diagnostics

“A Fast, Sensitive Virus Detector: A sensor that measures the concentration of viruses in minutes could make possible a handheld device that cheaply and quickly spots pathogens”.
“Virus detection encounters some useful interference: There are many ways of detecting viruses, even at very low concentrations — but none yet combines convenience, sensitivity and speed. A new prototype shows how it might be done”.
These are the headlines of two news stories that have recently been published by the MIT’s Technology Review and Materials Science and Nanotechnology @Nature.com about an article that Dr. Aurel Ymeti, Dr. Hans Kanger, Prof. Jan Greve, and Prof. Vinod Subramaniam from the Biophysical Engineering (BPE) group and their co-authors have published in Nano Letters. ... read more
